How Data Centre Location and CDN Design Affect Asia-Pacific Website Performance
Why the nearest server is important, but not the only infrastructure decision affecting real website performance.
A website hosted far from its visitors takes longer to exchange data. The delay may be small for one request but becomes noticeable when a page requires many network round trips.
What is latency?
Latency is the time required for data to travel between the user and server. It is affected by physical distance, routing, congestion and the number of requests.
What a CDN does
A content delivery network distributes cached images, stylesheets, JavaScript, fonts, downloads and sometimes HTML through edge locations closer to visitors.
It can also provide TLS termination, traffic filtering, image optimisation and DDoS mitigation.
What a CDN does not fix
It cannot automatically solve slow database queries, heavy application code, poor images, excessive JavaScript or third-party latency.
Choose origin location by workload
Consider where users, administrators and integrations are located; whether traffic is static or dynamic; and how backups and recovery are designed.
Webz Fusion provides Data Centre Options for projects with location-specific requirements.
Ecommerce and WordPress
Ecommerce combines product media, search, cart, session and checkout. Static content can be cached while personalised actions remain dynamic.
WordPress performance can improve through page caching, object caching, a CDN, database optimisation and appropriate PHP capacity. See WordPress Cloud Hosting and Premium WordPress VPS.
Test complete journeys
Test initial load, navigation, search, login, cart, checkout, forms and APIs from target markets and realistic mobile networks.
Resilience
Consider node failure, origin failure, backup, DNS failure, certificate renewal and provider outages. The closest server is not useful if there is no recovery plan.
Webz Fusion’s Linux Cloud Hosting, Managed VPS and Performance Add-ons can be matched to the application rather than selected only by storage size.
