How to Migrate a Website Without Losing SEO, Email or Customer Trust
A step-by-step migration framework for changing platforms, hosting or domains while protecting search visibility and business operations.
A website migration can improve design, hosting or technology. It can also create serious losses when old URLs disappear, forms stop working or email records are changed incorrectly.
Identify the migration type
Common moves include new hosting with the same URLs, a new content-management system, domain change, URL restructuring, ecommerce platform migration or multilingual restructuring.
Crawl the current website
Record every indexable URL, page title, status code, canonical, redirect, internal link, structured data item, image and sitemap entry. This becomes the baseline.
Preserve valuable URLs
Keep existing URLs where they remain logical. When a URL must change, map it to the most relevant replacement page. Do not redirect every old page to the homepage.
Build a redirect map
The map should include old URL, new URL, redirect type, reason and test status. Use permanent server-side redirects for lasting moves.
Protect email and DNS
Before changing DNS, export all records and confirm MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, subdomains and verification records. Webz Fusion’s Web Hosting and Domains service can coordinate these dependencies.
Test the new environment
Check pages, forms, login, checkout, payments, emails, mobile behavior, redirects, analytics, structured data, robots rules, canonicals and performance.
Prepare the launch window
Launch when technical staff are available and no major campaign is running. Keep the old platform available temporarily and prepare a rollback plan.
Monitor search after launch
Verify Search Console, submit the sitemap, inspect key URLs, monitor 404s, review redirect chains and compare conversion behavior.
Webz Fusion can connect Web Design and Development, Website Maintenance and hosting during migration.
